Picton Portage Race 2013

April 11, 2013

If you have not competed in this race before then it is certainly one to knock off.

The race involves 27km of kayaking and a couple of portages to get between the two beautiful waterways in the Marlborough Sounds.  And with the race start/finish only a 2 minute walk from the ferry terminal, it’s easy to get across even without a vehicle.

Check out more details and entry form of the race here – Picton Portage Race – Entry Form 2013

Pre PGT Kayak Race Results – 23rd March 2013

March 24, 2013

Well it was a small but dedicated field who turned up for the pre-race to the Porirua Grand Traverse Kayak section on Saturday, and they were greeted with some great conditions (to begin with at least).

There was a good mixture of crafts with K1s, TK1s, Multisport Boats and a Surf Ski in the mix, all ready for the group start.

The pace was hot right from the gun with Kurtis and Ryan heading straight up the guts and Chester taking a left hand channel to the first turn around down at Whiteria jetty.  This pace spread the field fairly quickly and a variety of route choices were taken as everyone travelled north to cross the channel and head under Paremata bridge.

After a few good route selections and hard effort Chester managed to bridge the gap to take the lead as the three leaders headed to the turn around point at the mouth of Brown’s Bay.  The patches of weed over the course challenged a few competitors and forced Kurtis out of his boat for a quick bit of gardening to clear his rudder.  It was also this section of the course that was a little more exposed to the northerly and this wind had picked up a little by this stage too.

Some close racing for the woman’s honours was also going on between Rachel and Fiona as they battled up to the turn-around.

On the way back home Kurtis managed to catch Chester and Ryan and take what ended up being an unassailable lead.  The result being a win to Kurtis, 2nd to Ryan and the final podium spot to Chester.

In the woman’s race, it was only 41 seconds separating the first two, with Rachel Baker taking the win and Fiona Dowling claiming second.

Thanks to all who turned up and hopefully this served as a good hit out pre-PGT for those planning to take part in this on the 7th of April.  If not then you may wish to check it out

CRNZ Sprint Nationals 2013

January 11, 2013

The CRNZ sprint nationals are even earlier than previous years for 2013 and now that we have just turned into the new year they are almost upon us at 15, 16 and 17 February.

Usual practice is U23, U18, Open and Vets on the Friday races and the Novice, U14 and U16 age groups come in for Saturday and Sunday races.

CRNZ have the programme on their website now and you can enter for your chosen event(s) via

We need to know that that you are looking to go pretty much immediately so please email or some sort of advice to either Mark or Greg would be the best approach.

If you are thinking this may not be for you, take the example of Malcolm and Sandy Robbins who came to the last regatta in December and raced at the event.  They also managed a great weekend away with family, mountain biking at Redwoods and of course brilliant company of the paddlers and associated folk from MKRC!!  It really is an event for paddlers of all levels/abilities.

Once we know who is going we will organise into team boats also.

Training is still Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8am, and Tuesday and Thursdays at 6 pm. Please note – Tuesdays and Thursdays are different to the most recent e-mail you may have received regarding subs, which said Wednesday nights.

Happy paddling!

Rubber Ducky Grand Final

December 11, 2012

Hi all

Tonight sees the fierce racing that is ‘Rubber Ducky” come to an exciting conclusion.  As a result, it would only be fitting to mix it up a little, so although the southerly is about, racing will start from Kupe and head across to Cobham Drive for a few laps.

Stick around afterwards too as there will be awards to present from througout the series and also a few snags, bread and T sauce to consume!

As per usual, registrations from 6pm, racing starts at 6.30pm.

See you all there.
