The Kupe/Mana kayak race series has kicked off again after the Christmas break. Come along on Tuesday evenings for some competitive racing. Start times are on a handicap basis with slower paddlers getting away first, and you’re grouped with others of a similar standard, so there’s always someone nearby. Races are usually 5-7 km and the first group off the start line departs an 6:30pm. The venue is normally Hataitai beach but in a strong southerly we occasionally change to Oriental Bay. The Kupe (and Mana) Facebook page confirms the venue on the day. Results are posted in the same place on race night.
The course is chosen to suit conditions and may be laps of the bay or a trip round the Carter Fountain in Oriental Bay, generally staying fairly close to shore. PFDs are required by all entrants. Racing is open to kayaks, surf & ocean skis and waka amas, single and double. Stand up paddle boards are welcome but the course is the same.
Entry is free to members of the Kupe and Mana kayak clubs and $5 per boat to non-members.
Report to race officials by 6:15 pm on race night.
