The Rubber Ducky series is under way

September 29, 2010

Well we seem to know how to time our races at Mana. On Saturday we had a pretty good day of weather but uncannily the worst of the conditions just happened to occur between the start hooter and the finish line. And so it was again last night at Evan’s bay on a typical windy spring evening for the first of the seven race 2010 Rubber Ducky series. Sure it was a windy old evening anyway but the conditions paddlers had to endure during the race were certainly the worst of the night.

The conditions did nothing to stop Hamish Beattie (starting 6 minutes down), Craig Jones (7 mins) and Tyler Maxwell (6 mins) carving through just about the entire field to come from the back to cross the line in a tight group.

In the womens field, “The” Jude Ellis lead for most of the race making a mockery of the first up handicaps to extend her lead only to get caught by the fast boys on the last lap. Jude certainly demonstrated the big improvements she has made over the winter out at Mana. The handicappers will be sure to add a big chunk onto Jude’s handicap for next week.

Some other good paddles were undone by the conditions. Big thanks must go out to Chris and Jo in their Hypernova, Paul Chaplow, Emily Nota and Alice Ashford who DNF’d due to assisting a swimmer. You guys all get a free entry next week as a gesture of thanks from the organisers.

The rubber ducky’s will be presented next week. You can check out the full results here.
