Porirua Duathlon Results

June 21, 2010

Sunday’s Porirua Duathlon was the first in a three race series of kayak / run duathlons run by Mana kayak racing club. The 15 athletes not put off by the early rain enjoyed flat paddling conditions albeit with occasional drizzle.

The kayak leg consisted of two 5km laps on glassy Porirua harbour where athletes would paddle beside the trail they would soon encounter on the run stage. From the outset, veteran multisporter Glen Muirhead jumped to an early lead that he would continue to extend throughout the remainder of the race. In second place Dougie Wilkins was giving chase with Marianne Archer in third place then a gap back to a group including Matt Archer, Dean Ford and Ben Candy. This was the order heading into transition.

The 8km run stage took athletes into Whitirea Park around the shoreline to Onehunga Bay returning over the hill top via a farm track which had turned into a bit of a mudslide after the overnight rain. But there was no stopping Muirhead clearing out to a convincing win. Behind him, multisporters Ford and Candy were storming  past the specialist paddlers recording fast runs to take second and third places respectively.

All athletes enjoyed the course, which was designed to be achievable by anyone, while still providing a good hit out for the seasoned racer. Two more races remain in the kayak / run duathlon series. However the next kayak race hosted by Mana is the Porirua Criterium, a handicap points race in which paddlers score points at the completion of every lap. This is a fun event, and being a handicap race, everyone has a chance to win. Details can be found on the events page on our website.
