McDowell & Archer take out Wellington Marathon

May 15, 2010
Better conditions could not have been ordered for the 2010 Wellington Kayak Marathon Champs. Early morning drizzle gave way to dead still conditions and clearing skies which was ideal for marathon paddling.

29 paddlers, in a range of craft, entered the marathon and half marathon. Marty McDowell took out the open mens 20km race, having been pushed the whole way by Glen Muirhead, with promising under 19 paddler Jason Anderson impressively taking 3rd with a sprint at the finish.

Marianne Archer took the open women’s title, although her battle with the boys was ruined following rudder problems after she took a spill on damp grass during the first of four portages.

The event provided a good hit out for the half dozen or so local paddlers heading to Blenheim in a couple of weeks for the national marathon champs.

It was also nice to have a few people hang around to socialise after the event and help to finish off the mountain of baking provided. Full credit to all of the bakers.
