April News 2

April 29, 2009

Hi all,

Gee it’s been awhile since the last newsletter but its now time to get organised for the winter season. Can’t believe how quickly the summer goes!!!

Firstly congratulations to all the club members who competed at the National Sprint Championships earlier in the month. It is fantastic to see the progress you are all making.

For some of you the transition into the senior ranks is like a baptism of fire but you should all be proud of how you performed. The most important aspect of this transition is that you keep focussed on your goals and to be realistic about  your performances.

Huge congratulations to Grace Acheson and Kayla Imrie for their outstanding performances in the U19 category. They came back with 8 medals each. If they keep improving at the rate that they have this year the future certainly is looking pretty good for them both.

In the U17’s it was great to see Portia and Netta competing in their first ever nationals. It certainly isn’t easy to just line up in a sprint race but the more you do it the better you get at it and they will both be better for it next year.

In the seniors the highlight was the open men’s performance in the K4 500m where they placed 3rd in a very competitive field. Not bad for 3 19yr olds and the old man of the group Sam Blyde. It was also encouraging to see the performances of Simon Trotter in the open’s – Simon trained very hard over the summer and got the rewards for it with some impressive performances.

But the real highlight had to be the masters K4 – there certainly was class in this boat and although we didn’t win or get 2nd or 3rd we were in there and all I can say watch out masters as next year we’ll be able to go in a straight line, have no sudden leans, paddle in time and have waist lines like rocks!!

It’s great that there is masters at the nationals now and with so many competing it certainly makes it competitive, as we found out – so old fella’s and gals if you want to have a go at this come along to training and we’ll get you into it.

Training

Hopefully you are all now well rested and have had a good break and are rearing to get into it again as there are some great races to get into this winter and of course lots of skills to learn. Have been having a big think about the programme for this winter and in particular the times when we train – so what I propose is that we have a meeting on 7 April at Marianne’s and Matt’s house at 6:30pm. I would really appreciate it if you could all be there as I’d like to go over the programme planned and to get your feed back on some of the ideas.

Marianne’s address is:

17 Morning View

Titahi Bay

Those who did the surf champs may want another week off which is fine but for the rest let’s get into it this weekend.

Saturday 8am

Sunday 8am.

There is a group who have started training at 6:30am on weekday mornings, so if this suits join in.

Team Boat Sundays – we are planning on turning the Sunday sessions into team boat sessions especially for those who don’t usually paddle team boats. Its a lot more social and of course we can coach you in the skills in paddling these boats. Will have more details on this soon when the committee have discussed the yearly plan.

Talking of committees we are looking for more people to come onto the committee to help develop the club. There are so many projects that we’d like to get started on this year and are finding that we need some more help to get them going so if you are keen and can help out please do contact me or anyone associated with the committee.

Working Bee – well clubrooms tidy upJ

A few of us have already made a start on this, we are keen to get rid of all the old stuff(fridge, TV, Microwave etc) that is clogging up the kitchen and replace it with nice new stuff so that we can use the kitchen more often.

It would be great to have drinks and food for after the sessions available especially on Saturday and Sunday. Thinking of making up a muffin roster for supplying muffins after the Sundays training sessions, so again watch this space or more particularly watch the new fridge in the clean kitchen for some muffins.

So Sunday 29 March 10am bring a cloth and bucket and lets tidy it up and make it more pleasant for everyone.

I will start updating the website again with details of events and training so have a look at it.

Look forward to seeing you all again

Paddles up

Mark
